In partnership with Union Public Schools, The bART Center for Music offers Guitar Club two times weekly after school at Boevers Elementary School. Students learn guitar playing skills and develop creative, intellectual and technical abilities to meet the needs of artistic self-expression, along with the skill to sight-read sheet music. Led by bART guitar instructor Tye Slagle, this program provide participants with an early start in instrumental music.
Documented benefits of playing a guitar include but are not limited to: improves concentration and memory, boosts confidence and connects individuals on a personal level to others, decreases anxiety, and improves math and literacy skill. Cultural differences in music add to social studies and broader ethnic understanding as students connect music to multiple cultures and countries.
The bART provides Boevers School with instructor(s), instruments, and music materials at no cost to the school, the children or their families. This is made possible through the financial support of The Oklahoma Arts Council, The Sharna and Irvin Frank Foundation and The Joseph L. Hull Jr. Family Foundation.
